Bodegas Carlos Serres Onomástica 2015
One hundred years had passed, but to the bright red soils it seemed to have only been a minute.
This special Magellan release was made in honor of the 100th anniversary of the bodega that produced it. It's a classically styled Rioja, enticing with a wave of strawberry cream and rose petal balanced by a perky acidity and toasted oak. The Tempranillo is complimented perfectly by a touch of perfume added by the addition of Graciano.
This feeling is personified by Bodegas Carlos Serres, a winery founded by a well regarded Bordeaux wine consultant over 100 years ago. Though the years have gone by, the winery still focuses on showcasing the quality of the region, which was recognized by Mr. Serres when he escaped Bordeaux to find a new place to produce wines of the highest quality. He recognized the area around Haro, the unofficial capital of the Rioja wine region, as possessing the perfect combination of climate, soil and topography to produce extremely fine wines.
This wine shows its quality through tradition, all grapes are harvested by hand into small bins and carefully sorted and fermented to produce an excellent starting point. Then the young wine sits in barrel for 12 months as it mellows and develops. Finally, after bottling, the wine is aged 10 months to be sure it is had plenty of time to acclimate to life in the bottle.
The long, cold winters and mild summers of this area imbue this wine with a perfect balance of body, tannin and acidity that make the wine delicious now but also an excellent candidate for a year or two in the cellar.
