Merlot Reserve 2017

Merlot Reserve 2017

The shovel bounced back as the firm blue clay and gravel defended from its attacks. The man wiped his brow and looked back at the new vineyard he was slowly planting, the wandering Dordogne River lying half a mile further away. One more down, five thousand two hundred and thirty six to go. With a firmer push he broke through the dense earth. He looked down at the small hole and began to widen it, each shovelful getting easier to pry out. Don't worry hard ground, he thought, you will take well to the vine as it will take well to you...

Wine Profile
Tasting Notes
Intense and fruit-forward on the nose, this pleasingly opaque wine soars out of the ordinary with bright raspberry and chocolate that set the stage for a jammy and powerful palate. Savory wood smoke, pepper, and plum flavors harmonize into a remarkably long finish that keeps the smile plastered to your face long after the wine is gone.
Vineyard Notes
Merlot is sadly underappreciated compared to its pairing partner, Cabernet Sauvignon. From the best sites Merlot shows amazingly complex and rich flavors and the ability for long aging. This one is no exception and would make the legendary Merlot producing sites in Bordeaux proud of their diaspora.
Winemaker Notes
Merlot is one of the most popular red wine varietals, second only to Cabernet Sauvignon in planted acreage across the globe. Merlot is made in two main styles. The "International style" tends to emphasize inky, purple colored wines that are full in body with high alcohol and lush, velvety tannins with intense, plum and blackberry fruit. Or, the traditional "Bordeaux style" where the fruit is harvested earlier producing medium-bodied wines with fresh, red berry flavors. At Europa Village we make both styles. We sorted the highest quality fruit to make this robust and age worthy wine which is delicious now but will continue to improve with bottle age through 2024.
Food Pairing Notes
A powerful wine like this calls out for rich barbequed ribs or brown sugar & dijon glazed pork loin.
