Barolo 2016

The rocky hills were silent for hours, finally broken by the footsteps of the veteran winemaker and his young apprentice. Stopping for a moment the apprentice reached down and touched a stone, “Signor, the stone is warm, yet the clouds cover us, how is this possible?” Smiling, the winemaker said, “The stones hold the heat of the sun, my friend, and keep the grapes ripening, even when the sun dips behind the clouds.” The apprentice nodded and they began to walk again, he knew he had much to learn.

Tasting Notes
Stunning the nose with fierce aromas of dark chocolate covered cherry, fresh wild mint, and earth, one can spend minutes deciphering the incredible range this wine delivers to the nose. Once on the palate, there is no difference in drama, with weighty plum and espresso flavors underscoring a huge tannin and volleys of smoky oak.

Winemaker Notes
Known by many as the wine of kings, we like to think that this is the king of wines for the experience it delivers. Made from the rare Nebbiolo grape, this is a dramatically powerful and young example of a legendary wine. During the Regno di Sardegna 1720-1861, King Carlo Alberto of Savoy decided to produce his own wine after discovering his love for the Nebbiolo wine which was produced in the surrounding hills of Barolo. Since then, the Barolo appellation has expanded to surrounding villages including Monforte d’Alba - more precisely “Perno,” a classified cru of Monforte and “Santo Stefano,” a sub-cru covered with vineyards and a medieval rural chapel atop the hilltop. Enjoy this rare gem at this very moment or let the aging of the bottle magically turn the “Wine of the Kings” into the “King of Wines.”
Food Pairing Notes
Pairs well with an Italian white truffle gnocchi with prosciutto.
