Arneis 2018

The single plot of vines occupied a small corner of the green and verdant valley, surrounded by rolling hills. Glancing out the window of his small house as he tasted the latest vintage the old winemaker set his jaw firmly. "I will not let you become extinct," he thought, nodding at the vines below. "You have too much to show the world."

Wine Profile
Tasting Notes
Complex yet light and airy aromas of honey, wild herbs, water chestnut, and pear skin. Arneis is renowned for having a body that is much fuller than the aroma would indicate and this one is true to form. Rich and extremely full-bodied, flavors of apricot, pear, and a slight nuttiness like honey-dipped cashews carry this wine through an extremely long finish.
Winemaker Notes
Like Viognier, Arneis was nearly driven to extinction as the wine world globalized and more readily known varieties took the place of regional heirlooms. But the work of a single Piedmontese winemaker, Alfredo Currado, is largely to thank for variety not being lost. He began to focus on the variety in 1967 and over the next decades succeeded in promoting and spreading this unique variety not just in Northern Italy, but the world over. This delicious example makes you wonder why it ever got close to extinction.
Food Pairing Notes
A very versatile food pairing wine, but really the perfect match for Aglio e olio, which was featured recently in our fun Europa Table!
