Sangiovese Riserva Orcia 2019
In the corner of the stone cellar the largest casks sat, filled with the finest wine of the property. They were now so old that none of the family knew when they had come into the cellar. Various ‘experts’ had come and gone, advising them to get rid of them, to use small barrels, tanks, something new, something ‘modern.” However, they knew not to fool with the doctrine set forth by some long passed ancestor, “the best wine goes in the casks for two years, and then for a year in the bottle.” And so they did as he had so far back in the past, with enviable results…

Wine Profile
Tasting Notes
Deep and dense color hinting at the power of the wine with aromas of cherry liqueur and wild herb cascading out of the glass with great alacrity. On the palate, it is full-bodied, rich, and firm, reminiscent of dark chocolate and cinnamon-dusted red fruits.
Winemaker Notes
The Magellan program is all about finding the very best rare and special wines that are never available anywhere else. This time we have taken that commitment to a new level by buying out the entire production of an incredibly special wine. This 100% Sangiovese comes from the Val d’Orcia, a UNESCO World Heritage site marked by rolling hills, natural hot springs, and a tranquility that we deeply admire. Produced from 100% Sangiovese grapes grown in slate soils, this wine is entirely hand-harvested and normally aged for three years, two in traditional large casks and one in the bottle, before release. We felt it was so age-worthy and special that we kept it for another eighteen months to give it the best ability to show its very best.
Food Pairing Notes
A masterclass in great Italian Sangiovese, this is a perfect candidate for up to ten years in the cellar or with a Bistecca alla Fiorentina.
