Primitivo Temecula Valley 2019

The rains pounded the boat as the waves tossed it about like a toy, sending the crew racing fore and aft to control the rudder and rigging. The young vines, bound tightly to the deck for their transatlantic voyage, saw their carefully inked tags wetted and smeared by the incessant precipitation and splash of the waves. Finally, as the weather cleared, the captain examined his cargo, shaking his head at the smeared tags. Looking up at the sky he said, “Well Lord, at least YOU know what these are.”

Wine Profile
Tasting Notes
A beautiful medium purple in color, it dazzles with aromas of raspberry crème, cherry liqueur, and autumn leaves. On the palate it stays true to the Puglian style, balancing a fresh acidity and slight jamminess with flavors of black cherry and a smooth, well-integrated tannin.
Winemaker Notes
Primitivo, a red grape indigenous to Italy’s Puglia, is genetically identical to Zinfandel, which is also genetically identical to Crljenak Kastelanski, a notable grape from Croatia, which lies just across the Adriatic Sea from Italy. It is one of the great mysteries of the wine world whether the grape originated in Italy or Croatia, but we do know that it made its way to the East Coast of the United States in the early 1800s where it became popular as a table grape before being taken to California for winemaking purposes. In California it quickly surpassed the old Spanish Mission grape and became the dominant red variety grown. Tasting this one it’s not hard to figure out why the variety became so popular.
Food Pairing Notes
Perfect for a plate of prosciutto di Parma and mozzarella or cranberry glazed turkey.
